Water Meter Replacement and AMR System Installation

In 2007, Weiss Construction, and our project partners, Walbridge and Hale Electric, were awarded a $154 Design Build Contract with the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) for one of the largest Automated Meter Reading (AMR) projects ever undertaken in North America.

Weiss Construction served as managing partner of the Joint Venture and was responsible for managing the design and implementing AMR improvements.

This project scope includes the complete replacement of the following:

  • Removal and replacement of approximately 280,000 residential, commercial and industrial water meters throughout the DWSD system.
  • Project design and implementation from conception to completion, including the head end integration of the comprehensive AMR system and infrastructure.
  • Management of a project call center and warehousing facility to schedule, coordinate and support the installation of water meters and the fixed based AMR infrastructure.

The comprehensive AMR solution provided by the Weiss Team allowed DWSD to successfully transition their water billing system from an outdated and labor intensive manual read system to a state of the art automated system based on precision electronic based readings obtained in real time.
